Jeans
Jeans are so well known that there is no need to describe them. Jean is, in fact, a fabric of heavy twilled cotton, believed to have been first made in Genoa, from which the name derives. In America, in plantation days, a coarse weave cotton and woollen fabric called Kentucky Jean was used for narrow working breeches. Both cloth and style came to be adopted as the national âplayâ garment both for men and women.
No single garment has ever had such an influence on the costume in general. We note, too, that it is a garment originally destined for working in, that has graduated into something for playing in, and then has influenced that shape of formal cloths. Jeans are more attractive when well worn, being made in a cloth of a colour and texture which is improved by frequent rough washing, as are most peasant clothes: a sturdy symbol of democracy.
Jersey Knit
Jersey Knit is a heavy knitted fabric; âknittedâ being the joining up of yarn in loops as distinct from âwovenâ which is the cloth produced by the âin-and-outâ weaving of a weft (side-to-side) yarn on a warp (top-tobottom) yarn.
In a jersey-knit cloth, extra-weight is obtained by double-knitting, which is the joining of two fabrics back-toback. This is more stable than the single-jersey process, and is therefore easier to tailor. In tailoring, jersey-knit as a cloth is liked for its lightness and its smooth texture. With foam-backing to give it more body, it becomes an economical and versatile cloth for tailored garments.
